According to new census data, Connecticut has one of the lowest divorce rates in the nation. Couples residing in the Northeast states were far less likely to get a divorce than those living in the South. In the South, states like Kentucky, Alabama and Texas had some of the highest divorce rates, despite often taking a more traditional approach to marriage and family. The U.S. Census Bureau released this information in a new report on marriage and divorce rates.
The Census Bureau calculated that the national average of women and men divorcing was 9.7 and 9.2 out of 1000, respectively. These numbers were determined with data collected in 2009. The Northeast’s rate was just 7.5 for women and 7.2 for men, numbers that are considerably lower than the national average. In the South, the rate was 11.1 for women and 10.2 for men.
A sociologist believes that there are many factors at play here. Some of these are education, age and income. In the Northeast, many people put off marriage, so they can attend and finish college or establish a career. This means that the marriage rate is lower on top of the lower divorce rate.
The same sociologist also believes that a push in some regions against pre-marital sex may be prompting some individuals in the South and certain rural areas elsewhere to get married earlier. If these individuals have lower income and education levels, the likelihood of them getting divorced is much higher.
