Guiding People Through Divorce With Grace And Dignity For More Than 30 Years

Moving Out? Be Sure To Grab These Important Documents.

If you’re divorcing and moving out of your marital home, you’re no doubt going through a tumultuous time – and you’re probably not thinking about getting your paperwork in order. You should, however, grab or make copies of some household documents before you move out. Taking this simple step now can save you time, expenses, and upset down the road.

A Connecticut divorce demands seemingly endless documentation, and much of it may be in your home. If you copy the documents before you move out, you’re more likely to have unfettered access to the items that you need. If you wait until after you’ve moved out and your divorce potentially heats up, you might have to endure the added expense and time of involving your attorney.

Helpful Financial Documentation

Every divorce is unique, but each one involves creating a snapshot of your family financials. You can accomplish this by compiling the financial documents that prove the state of your marital assets and debts:

  • Tax returns
  • Checking and savings account statements
  • Pay stubs
  • Employment contracts
  • Retirement account statements
  • Credit card and loan statements
  • Your last will and testament
  • Inheritance and trust documents
  • Real estate documents
  • Deeds or other documents of possession (including car titles)

These, along with any other statements that pertain to your situation, will help you and your divorce attorney move forward with your case while producing an accurate picture of your marital financials.

Personal Documents

If you’re moving out of your home during a divorce, it’s easy to overlook your own personal documents, which you probably have securely ensconced within your family home. Nevertheless, you will need many of these official documents throughout the course of your divorce (and they belong to you personally). Remember:

  1. Your Social Security card
  2. Your birth certificate
  3. Your passport

Always keep these forms of personal identification safely in your own possession.

The Connecticut Discovery Process

If you do move out and fail to obtain the documents or copies of documents that you need for your case, and if your soon-to-be-ex chooses to be difficult, you’ll probably have to get what you need through the state’s discovery process. This follows a legal protocol, and if your spouse fails to comply, your attorney may need to file a Motion to Compel Discovery. To avoid any unnecessary issues in discovery, make copies of your important financial documents before you move out of your family home or before your spouse moves with them.
