A mother who has been charged in connection with allegations of abuse she supposedly committed against her baby is being held in jail on a $75,000 bond. The woman, a 22-year-old from Norwalk, Connecticut, could lose physical custody of her child. Connecticut Family Lawyer
The 5-month-old baby girl was brought to the hospital by the mother’s parents, who she was living with before she was arrested. The mother’s boyfriend was also living with the parents at the time. According to medical officials and the police, the child’s body was covered in bruises, and she had seven fractured ribs and a fractured skull. The commander of the Norwalk Police youth bureau said that this case was one of the worst committed in his more than 20 years on the force.
The 22-year-old woman faces felony charges of first-degree risk of injury to a minor and assault against a minor. Authorities are not sure how long the baby has been subjected to this sort of physical abuse and are attempting to estimate how recent of all of her injuries are. Though one arrest has already been made, authorities believe they will find grounds for more. According to police, abuse on this level could not have been easily kept quiet from others living in the home.
The Connecticut Department of Children and Families has stepped into the situation and taken the 5-month-old away from the family. Medical officials are not sure how permanent the effects of the child’s injuries will be, but the child has been released from the hospital. Authorities have said that the girl is in a good mood despite the injuries she has sustained.
Suspected abuse is one of the many reasons a parent’s child custody may be altered. Hopefully the state will do all that it can to help protect the young girl in this case.
