A 31-year-old man from Connecticut was recently sentenced to 60 years in prison after he was convicted of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend. The domestic violence incident was the end to a relationship supposedly littered with threats and emotional torture from the suspect.
On Valentine’s Day in 2009, the 31-year-old man stabbed his former girlfriend outside of her home. She was 25 years old and had been attending the University of Hartford while working on a master’s degree in communications.
The couple broke up a few months before the incident. The 25-year-old woman had received a restraining order against her former boyfriend due to a history of threats he made toward her. Despite the restriction, the man continued harassing her and, on the day of her death, waited for her outside of her apartment in Plainville, Connecticut.
Her father had recently installed a security camera outside of her apartment because she was worried for her safety. The video shows that when she realized that he was waiting for her, she ran away. The stabbing occurred out of the range of the surveillance camera. She was stabbed 18 times.
After being stabbed, she phoned 911 and reported that she was bleeding to death after being stabbed by her former boyfriend. Both the video and the 911 call were used as evidence in the man’s trial. The death of the 25-year-old was one of several that allowed state lawmakers to pass stronger restrictions against domestic violence.
