When Connecticut parents get divorced, the children are often caught in the middle. This can cause some serious rifts to occur between the splitting spouses that may not be necessary if the divorce is approached with an amicable mindset. Though a gentle divorce is possible, it is often not the end result for couples. Many issues can get in the way. These often include emotions and finances.
For some divorcing parents, child support is required because one parent has received primary custody and cannot afford to care for the child on her or his own. When child support is paid, a former couple may be able to maintain a relationship that is helpful to the development of the child. In cases where it goes unpaid, the child may again be caught in the middle of an angry, emotional parenting relationship.
In some cases, the noncustodial parent is unable to afford the payments. This may be due to a job loss or some other extenuating circumstance. Of course, this is not the only reason that some parents do not pay support. Some simply choose not to do so. This is not a good choice because wages can be garnished and other income can be intercepted. If the back support becomes too large, the noncustodial parent can be arrested.
Recently, a 35-year-old man was taken into custody for crimes he had allegedly committed. He had led police officers on a short chase after authorities attempted to pull him over. He allegedly ran through several stop signs in a large SUV, reaching speeds of 50 miles per hour. After he finally stopped, police approached the vehicle and found his five children, ages 3 to 10, in the vehicle without safety restraints. They were screaming.
He was charged with child endangerment. In addition, there were warrants out for his arrest due to unpaid child support. It is unclear whether he attempted to flee due to the child support warrants.
