The decision to divorce can be extremely tough

Many marriages have failed in Connecticut and ended in divorce. Even though some perceive the divorce rate to be high, there are many marriages that are still together despite the fact that the relationship is actually unhealthy for everyone involved. Such marriages can be hard to leave, and they often include individuals who believe the relationship can be fixed, even though harsh circumstances have arisen.

This is exactly the kind of situation one woman was stuck in more than 15 years ago. She and her significant other had been married for less than three years. She was 28 years old at the time and was eight months pregnant with the couple’s son. They already had a 14-month-old daughter at the time.

According to her story, her husband became violent with her and shoved her across the room. He pulled his fist back to hit her at some point during this altercation before it ended. Before their marriage, his anger had escalated without warning on some occasions, but he had never caused her physical harm. Over time, his temper got worse and he would later be diagnosed with emotional disorders. She believed that the relationship could be fixed so she stayed with him.

She did not want to be the one who would be faulted for breaking up the family by filing for divorce. But the damage done to their children by being part of a relationship such as this was likely more than if the woman had decided to end the marriage earlier.

Eventually, the divorce did occur and the man left the lives of the children and the woman. He would come back years later and make amends with the children, who have now forgiven him for his past behavior. It took a considerable amount of time for her to come to the realization that divorce was her only option — for her sake and that of her children. Some people put off divorce because they think it will be too expensive, as well. There are options, such as no-fault, mediation or collaborative divorce, which can save people money than expensive litigation.
